The majority of people over 20 who have a missing tooth are a candigate for an implant. There are some medical conditions that may affect whether or not the implant will fuse to your bone. If you have a condition such as cancer, radiation to the jaws, uncontrolled diabetes, smoking, alcoholism and uncontrolled periodontal (gum) disease the success rate of the implant integrating is reduced. Some medications may also affect the integration of the implant so it is important that you let Dr. Gakhal know of all the medications you are taking, including over the counter and herbal remedies.
How long you have been missing a tooth and the corresponding bone loss will also affect whether you are a good candigate for an implant. In most cases if there is not enough bone, this can be remedied through bone grafting or sinus lifting. Dr. Gakhal will of course discuss any concerns with you before proceeding with any treatment.
