IV Sedation

IV Sedation is the most common and effective way to administer sedation. Dr. Gakhal can effectively control the amount of sedation experienced using this method. Because Oral Sedation is accomplished by using a pill that must be absorbed into the stomach, the length and the amount of sedation is often unpredictable. In IV sedation the medication is administered straight into the blood stream so the amount and duration of the sedation is easy to control.

The level of sedation experienced during IV Sedation is greater than during Oral sedation. You will be what is termed "moderately" sedated, this means that while you may often "Doze" you will not be truely asleep. You will respond to simple commands such as "turn your head" and answer simple questions. You will not remember some or all of the procedure after it is completed. You will not require any sort of airway intervention, although you may be given oxygen if your levels are a bit low. Just like any other dental procedure local anesthetic will be used where indicated so that you are completely numb and do not feel any discomfort during treatment.

Your safety is our number one concern, therfore during IV sedation you will be continuously monitored by a member of the team. They will monitor your heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, respiration, your level of consciousness as well as general signs of well being. If anything is out of the range of normal, the team will act immediately to fix the problem. All staff members at Viewmont Dental Centre are trained in first aid and CPR and Dr. Gakhal is trained in Advanced Cardiovascular LIfe Support (the same training as Doctors and emergency room Nurses).

You will require someone to take you home and stay with you after the procedure is completed, so that you can sleep off any remaining effects of the sedation.

Don't wait any longer to have necessary dental work performed because you are nervous. Ask your dentist about IV sedation to see if it is right for you.
